How Do Chemical Peels Work?
Chemical peels work by using specialized acids to lower the skin’s pH level, typically to around 3.8, which is significantly lower than the skin’s natural pH of 5.5. This change in pH level chemically loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and healthy skin, allowing for exfoliation to occur as dead skin is removed.
As the skin regenerates, new, healthy cells grow back, resulting in a smoother and more even complexion. If you’re interested in boosting your natural cell turnover and regrowth cycle, book an appointment at Skin Deep Esthetics today. Our estheticians will discuss your personal goals and design an appropriate treatment plan to meet your skin goals.
What Can a Chemical Peel Be Used For?
What Does a Chemical Peel Feel Like?
The way a chemical peel feels varies depending on the depth of the peel and the sensitivity of an individual’s skin. For a superficial peel, you may experience a mild sunburn-like or tingling sensation that subsides once the peel is neutralized. For a medium-depth peel, you may feel a more intense stinging that lasts for around 15-20 minutes.
Some patients may experience tingling, itching, or a sense of tightness in their skin, which are all normal and temporary reactions. If you experience any discomfort during the treatment, it’s essential to communicate with your provider. They can take steps to make the experience more comfortable, such as using a fan or numbing cream. While it’s not as relaxing as a facial, a chemical peel is a worthwhile investment for achieving better and longer-lasting results.
Oak Brook’s Chemical Peel FAQs
After a deep chemical peel, you can expect to see significant improvements in the appearance and texture of the treated areas. However, it’s important to note that these results may not be permanent, as age and new sun damage can lead to the development of new lines and skin color changes over time. With regular treatments, you can achieve a more even skin tone, smaller pores, and a healthier complexion while also stimulating collagen production for firmer, more youthful-looking skin.
At Skin Deep Esthetics our mission is to help you achieve healthy skin. Here are a few tips about preparing your skin for a peel to give you the best results. To get the best results, our skin has to be hydrated.
Having a compromised barrier is the main reason why peels burn or cause redness, irritation, or post-peel peeling.
We have no problem telling clients they can’t get a peel because their skin isn’t hydrated. Working with us, our goal is to get your skin healthy so when we do your peel series, your skin will respond better and deliver results faster.
How to prep your skin for the BioRePeel:
- Use Hyaluronic acid twice a day to keep your skin hydrated for a week prior & post peel
- Avoid the sun during a series to prevent damage
- Drink extra water to keep yourself hydrated
- Don’t use any chemical exfoliation, such as glycolic, lactic, salicylic, etc, Retinols/Vitamin A, Vitamin C, or Tranexamic acid
- Avoid scrubs or mechanical brushes
- Avoid strong cleansers such as gel-based or acne cleansers
Following these guidelines ensures you have a great experience, achieve the results you came in for, and leave with glowing skin.
Post Peel Care:
- Wash your face with your cream cleanser or oil-based cleanser both morning and night
- Avoid scrubs, exfoliation, retinol, acids, Vitamin C, etc for 7 days
- Apply your hydrating serums – Hyaluronic Concentrate and Lifting Complex serum 2x a day for 7 days
- Apply your moisturizer morning and night
- Apply and reapply your SPF diligently
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours post peel
- Avoid exercising, saunas, heat exposure, etc for 48 hours post peel
We recommend doing a series of 4 treatments spread out over 10 days apart for someone with fine lines, smaller pores, and who wants a younger-looking appearance.
If you have deeper wrinkles, acne scarring, large pores, and textured skin, we recommend doing a series of 6 treatments every week. You can also pair this peel with microchanneling to maximize your benefits which we recommend for deeper wrinkles and acne scarring.
If you combine the BioRePeel with Microchanneling, we recommend doing your series of treatments every 2 weeks for 6 sessions.
Due to their natural protection of the skin, these peels can be done year-round. Traditional peels are only recommended during the fall and winter months.
These peels are great paired with Dermaplaning and Microchanneling to allow for better results especially when it comes to deeper wrinkles, acne scarring, dark spots or evening out the skin tone, textured skin, and large pores.
