Salmon DNA In Skincare: The Ingredient You Need
Salmon DNA: Could the secret to your skin problems be swimming in the ocean?
Salmon DNA in Skincare: Imagine waking up to your skin feeling firmer, hydrated, youthful, and brighter! If this sounds like a dream, you’re not alone. Many clients come to us suffering from uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and dryness – constantly searching for products to help their skin look and feel better. Salmon DNA is the superstar ingredient that quietly transformed skin for years, unnoticed. Now thanks to Kim Kardashian, it finally gets its moment in the spotlight
Today we are digging into salmon DNA: what it is, why it works, the must-have ingredient in your skincare routine, and how it can help you!
The Story of Salmon DNA
Skincare enthusiasts have used Salmon DNA, or PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide), derived from salmon sperm for several decades. It has gained popularity thanks to Kim Kardashian, who is known for getting salmon sperm facials. Salmon DNA was discovered in Korea and has been a skincare staple in K-beauty for many years. Why? Because its structure is similar to human DNA, allowing it to work well with our skin. Salmon DNA is not a fad – it’s an ingredient that is tried and true, backed by scientific studies.
Why Salmon DNA?
Known for its regenerative properties, salmon DNA’s unique ability to hydrate, heal, and rejuvenate the skin. Salmon DNA is most effective in a serum because it works deep inside the skin targeting collagen production and improving skin elasticity. Salmon DNA works like a reset for our skin; whether stressed from cold weather, sun damage, the wrong skincare products, or aggressive skin treatments – salmon DNA restores your skin barrier and improves your skin’s health.
When our clients use salmon DNA correctly, they see improvement in hydration, especially in the winter months. Salmon DNA is key for clients with a compromised barrier or new clients who have come to us after using skincare products or skin treatments that have damaged their barrier.
Aging, Collagen, and the Science of PDRN
We are ALL going to age, it’s inevitable, however, no one said you have to look old as you age!
Salmon DNA targets fibroblast cells, which aid in stimulating collagen and improve skin elasticity. Polydeoxyribonucleotide or PDRN is the DNA extracted from salmon sperm. Many companies list Salmon DNA as PDRN on a product label. PDRN has been researched due to its anti-inflammatory, wound healing, skin brightening, and stimulation of collagen and elastin for firmer-looking skin. PDRN affects 2 main components in the skin; adenoside A2A receptor and fibroblast cells.
In a PubMed study, damaged fibroblast cells were treated with PDRN. The results show that PDRN heals cells, reduces inflammation, and repairs the skin at the dermal level by stimulating collagen. This means firmer, plumper skin with fewer wrinkles; who doesn’t want that? We recommend you check this study out!
PDRN activates the Adenosine A2A Receptors, whose primary function is wound healing. This process allows tissue repair faster and more effectively even in skin damaged by excess UV radiation or sun damage. That same study shows that PDRN repairs damage from harmful UVB rays. UVB rays are the deeper wavelengths responsible for dermal damage and affect our cells’ DNA. The study also states, “PDRN addition to the cell culture immediately after irradiation resulted in p53 protein activation and in enhancing DNA repair likely due to the priming of the salvage pathway.”
Salmon DNA And Your Skincare Routine
One of the reasons salmon DNA is so effective is it shares similar properties to human DNA. Both share DNA structures and functions. This is why salmon DNA has been used in skincare products. At Skin Deep Esthetics, we have used products with salmon DNA in our microchanneling treatments.
Regularly using salmon DNA in treatments and at home is a game-changer for our clients because it aids in:
- Post-peel, dermaplaning, and microchanneling treatments
- Compromised skin barriers from over-exfoliating or harsh skincare products or treatments
- Deeper wrinkles or prevention of fine lines deepening
We recommend using our salmon DNA serum, Lifting Complex Serum, which contains both salmon DNA and peptides at home.
Key benefits of using our Lifting Complex Serum:
- Deeply firm, plump, and hydrate the skin.
- Improves the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
- Leaves skin firmer and brighter.
- Improves skin elasticity and suppleness.
- Delays the appearance of the first signs of aging.
- Maintains a healthy cutaneous microbiota
Pairing PDRN with retinol and hyaluronic acid is a match made in heaven for your skin!
🐟 PDRN and retinol target fibroblast cells which are responsible for keeping your collagen strong. Unlike PDRN, retinol does create sun sensitivity and can irritate the skin if used incorrectly. If you cannot tolerate retinol, the answer for you would be to switch to PDRN because you will get similar benefits and target wrinkles.
🐟 PDRN and hyaluronic acid target hydration and, when paired together, keep the skin feeling hydrated and healthy. This combination of products is great for dry skin in the winter. We also use this serum combination twice daily post-peel, dermaplane, or microchanneling. We have more information about both Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid in previous blogs.
Post-Treatment Success Story
A few weeks ago, Samantha, our owner, did an aggressive skin treatment that consisted of a deeper peel + microchanneling with a serum containing PDRN on herself hoping to lighten her melasma. The result was skin peeling in areas where the melasma was the worst. Her post-treatment protocol included our Hyaluronic Concentrate Serum and Lifting Complex Serum twice daily to increase hydration and aid in wound healing. Followed up by moisturizer and SPF. Her skin significantly lightened up!
Salmon DNA and Microchanneling
Microchanneling creates microchannels in the skin, allowing for deep penetration of specialized serums into the skin. We love our serum that is a blend of PDRN, hyaluronic acid, glutathione, vitamin C, and niacinamide. This serum targets skin brightening along with hydration, lightens the appearance of wrinkles, and improves skin texture. Salmon DNA is an amazing ingredient that has many benefits to the skin. It has been researched and used in skincare and K-Beauty for many years before gaining recent popularity in the skincare market.
