🍁 Let us take the guesswork (and fear) out of this fabulous treatment that removes dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving you with radiant skin just in time for fall!

Why Is Dermaplaning A Game-Changer?

If the thought of a scalpel on your face is intimidating, we totally get it! Trust us! We are here to share all the details and information about Dermaplaning plus answer all your frequently asked questions.  We want you to be informed about Dermaplaning to help you decide whether this treatment is good for your skin.

👇 Here’s everything you need to know before you book your next appointment!👇

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive facial treatment that uses a surgical-grade scalpel to remove dead skin and peach fuzz. This deep exfoliation treatment leaves your skin fresh and smooth, allowing deeper product penetration. If you wear makeup, your makeup will go on smoothly!  This treatment is perfect for our Brides-to-be because they will glow on their wedding day!

Dermaplaning Benefits

Dermaplaning stimulates cell turnover. If you’ve read previous blogs, you know that cell turnover slows down as we age. This leads to wrinkles, large pores, textured skin, and dull-looking skin. Regular dermaplane treatments put your skin back on a normal cell cycle, thus helping reduce the appearance of aging. After one treatment, you’ll notice a glow to your skin, your skin will look younger, and your products will penetrate better.  Plus your skin will feel soft like a baby!

Benefits:
✨ Boosts cell turnover for younger-looking skin
👋 Reduces the appearance of wrinkles, large pores, and dullness
🧴 Improves product absorption and smooths makeup application
💖 Leaves skin feeling as soft as a baby!

How To Prepare for Your Dermaplane Facial

We want to ensure you get the best outcome possible. We suggest that 7 days before your dermaplane treatment you avoid the following:

Retinol
Acids or Harsh exfoliants – Glycolic, Salicylic, Latic, Scrubs, or mechanical exfoliating brushes
Sun tanning
Vitamin C

We want to ensure you don’t have any redness, irritation, or post-treatment flaking. Prepping your skin correctly ensures you have great results!

Post Care:

For 7 days post dermaplaning, here is our recommended home care:

🌿 Wash with a gentle cleanser, such as our Cleansing Milk or Essential Cleansing Oil
🌟 NO exfoliation
💧 Apply Hyaluronic Concentrate and our Lifting Complex Serum morning & night
🧴 Use a heavier moisturizer, such as our BioCalm Sensitive Skin Cream
🌞 NEVER skip the SPF!

Ready to get started?  Let’s dive into our FAQs!

Is Dermaplaning Safe?

Yes! When performed by a licensed, trained professional, dermaplaning is a safe treatment. At Skin Deep Esthetics, we learned a special technique to ensure safety and effectiveness for our clients.

Who Can Perform Dermaplaning?

In Illinois, dermaplaning can only be performed by licensed professionals who work under the direction of a physician. Before your first treatment, all clients must meet with our Nurse Practitioner to get medical clearance. This ensures you are a perfect candidate for dermaplaning! Please check with your state’s regulations on who can safely perform dermaplaning.

What Tools Are Used To Dermaplane?

We use a sterile, medical-grade scalpel. This scalpel helps safely remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz. We have a sharps container to dispose of our blades after each client. Safety is our #1 Goal!

How Often Should I Dermaplane?

For best results, we recommend monthly treatments. Dermaplane stimulates cell turnover, this gets our skin back on a monthly cell cycle, resulting in younger-looking skin!

Can I Dermaplane If I Have Acne or Breakouts?

This depends on the severity of your acne. We can work around a few breakouts, but if acne is on your cheeks, chin, and/or forehead, we recommend a series of our BioRePeel, regular Facials, and Blue Light Therapy to calm your acne before starting dermaplaning.

Do You Use Oil When Dermaplaning?

Yes, we do! At Skin Deep Esthetics, a specialized dermaplaning oil keeps the skin hydrated and minimizes redness and irritation.  When you shave your legs, don’t you use shaving cream? Same theory with dermaplaning, using a facial oil helps prevent post-dermaplaning irritation and dryness. Plus the oil helps the blade glide smoother over your skin.

Dermaplaning: At Home vs. Professional Treatment

Many clients ask about at-home kits, however, they’re not the same as what we offer in the spa. At-home kits are more like razors that can’t do a deep exfoliation like you would get with a professional scalpel. Plus, using a scalpel at home would leave you with cuts all over your face!  Our recommendation is to leave the deep exfoliation to the pros for that gorgeous glow!

Will My Hair Grow Back Darker?

No! Dermaplaning doesn’t change the thickness or color of your facial hair. Hormonal shifts in the body cause dark hair to grow. There are two types of facial hair: vellus hair and terminal hair.

Vellus Hair: (aka) Peach fuzz is light and short, mostly noticeable on the face. Vellus hair is all over our entire body, except for the palms of your hands and the bottom of your feet. The purpose of vellus hair is to keep our body warm or cool.

Terminal Hair: Also known as thick hair we have to shave. Terminal hairs control body temperatures, protect our scalp from UV rays, and keep germs out of the body. Terminal hair is found on our scalp, eyebrows, and eyelids. Terminal hair grows on our bodies when we begin puberty.

What To Expect During Your Treatment?

We begin with a double cleanse and an AHA/BHA solution to prep the skin, ensuring clean skin. We then apply the facial oil to reduce skin irritation and begin the dermaplane treatment covering the face and neck areas. Post-treatment, we apply our Hyaluronic Concentrate and Lifting Complex Serums, followed by a hydrating sheet mask to lock in moisture! Your skin will feel refreshed and glow when you leave!

Post-Treatment Tip: On the day of your dermaplane treatment, avoid sun exposure and re-apply SPF every 2 hours if you must be outside. Your freshly exfoliated skin needs extra protection!

Can Dermaplaning Cause Acne?

In some cases, dermaplaning can cause breakouts, especially if you’re prone to acne. If you have underlying acne, a dermaplane treatment may cause the skin to purge. However, most clients have no issues with post-treatment acne and many find their breakouts improve over time!

Dermaplane vs. Shaving Or Waxing

Dermaplaning: Uses a scalpel to exfoliate peach fuzz and dead skin cells. Done once a month.
Shaving: Uses a razor blade to cut the hairs at the surface level, providing a mild skin exfoliation. Shaving is typically done daily.
Waxing: Removes the hair from the root, typically lasting 3-6 weeks.  Waxing can be painful and is recommended every 4 weeks.
