Microchanneling: The Secret to Youthful Skin
Microchanneling: What is it?
Are you curious about microchanneling? Most are familiar with microneedling, however, microchanneling takes your skin to a whole new level! Microchanneling is becoming a popular treatment and a favorite amongst those who have previously tried microneedling – with better results and less downtime. Keep reading to learn more about microchanneling – why it helps achieve smoother, brighter, younger-looking skin, its benefits, who this treatment is for, and how it compares to microneedling. (Hint: you get better results than microneedling)
Ready to take your skin to the next level? Let’s dig in!
What Is Microchanneling?
💡Microchanneling, a non-invasive skin treatment that uses tiny needles to create microchannels in the skin. These microchannels stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, stimulating collagen and elastin – two important elements that keep our skin firm, smooth, and younger-looking. Microchanneling is known for helping tackle aging, scarring, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.
The Benefits You’ll Love
Microchanneling offers a wide range of benefits including:
🌟 Improving skin texture and tone
🌟 Smoothes fine lines and wrinkles
🌟 Reduces acne scarring
🌟 Brighter skin and even skin tone
🌟 Increased hydration and firmness
By creating microchannels in the skin, microchanneling increases deeper serum penetration, allowing active ingredients to reach the dermis and firm by stimulating collagen.
How Microchanneling Combats Aging
⏳ One of the key benefits of microchanneling is its ability to address aging at the cellular level. During the treatment, we apply a specialized serum – growth factors, hyaluronic acid, PDRN, or exosomes – to penetrate the dermis (the deeper layer of skin). This gets the product directly to the fibroblast cells, responsible for collagen, and elastin production.
Deep within the dermis of the skin are fibroblast cells, responsible for maintaining the health of our collagen. Think of fibroblast cells like a rubber band, they stretch and attach themselves to the collagen fibers. As we age and collagen breaks down, fragmentation occurs. We love our studies! In a study done by PubMed discussing fibroblast cells and aging, the study says “Fragmentation results from actions of specific enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases) and impairs the structural integrity of the dermis.“ When fragmentation occurs, fibroblast cells cannot attach themselves to the collagen, they shrink or collapse. If this happens, the wrong type of collagen, called COLase begins to form. COLase is present in those who have acne scarring. The picture below shows the difference in the fibroblast cells, taken from the article above. The top is a healthy fibroblast and the bottom is a collapsed fibroblast cell:
Collagen fragmentation causes the skin to age and once this process begins, it accelerates the aging process. Microchanneling can stimulate fibroblast cells, encouraging them to form healthy collagen, maintaining the skin’s structural integrity, and slowing down aging.
Acne Scarring And Microchanneling
💖 Acne scars form when fibroblast cells become damaged, they collapse and COLase becomes present. COLase is considered the “bad collagen” because when it forms, it creates scarring. Microchanneling restores healthy collagen and fibroblasts, which reduces scarring and gives you smoother skin. With a series of treatments, you can reduce the appearance of acne scarring and boost your skin confidence! When we restore the collagen, fibroblast cells become stretchy and can hold the collagen together. This lessens the acne scarring because the COLase cannot survive when good collagen is present.
Sun Damage And Melasma Reduction
☀️ If you’re dealing with sun-damaged skin or Melasma, microchanneling helps to even your skin tone. During the microchannel treatment, brightening serums target melanocytes (cells responsible for our skin color) to reduce dark spots. Our favorite brightening serum includes ingredients such as PDRN, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glutathione, and vitamin C – all working together to hydrate, repair, and brighten your skin.
Melasma is a little trickier to treat, however, we recommend pairing microchanneling with a peel series for optimal results! Our founder, Samantha, has been struggling with Melasma for several years and has been testing out protocols to help lighten her skin. Who Is Microchanneling For?
Microchanneling is ideal for anyone looking to:
🌟 Prevent or slow down aging
🌟 Brighten or even your skin tone
🌟 Achieve smoother skin texture
🌟 Reduce acne scarring
Whether you’re looking for antiaging solutions, a solution to uneven skin, less acne scarring, or smoother skin; microchanneling is the best option for you!
What Can You Expect?
For best results, here is what we recommend:
📅 Frequency: Monthly treatments are ideal. We only suggest bi-monthly treatments if you have acne scarring, deep wrinkles, or melasma
📅 Total Treatments: 3-5 treatments done in a series, then maintenance every 6 months
Specialized Serums Increase Results
💧 We use a variety of specialized serums during our treatment specifically designed for microchanneling. These serums, unlike topical serums, penetrate deeply to target fibroblast cells in the dermis. Microchanneling serums include growth factors, exosomes, PDRN, or Hyaluronic acid, enhancing both your skin’s appearance and health.
Can Microchanneling Damage Your Skin?
⚠️ Microchanneling, when performed by a licensed professional, is safe and effective. Microchanneling does not injure the skin’s barrier. At Skin Deep Esthetics, our mission is safety and each of our treatments can be performed on all skin types, including sensitive skin.
BioRePeel or Dermaplaning Add-Ons
🌟 Boost your results by pairing microchanneling with our BioRePeel or Dermaplaning treatment first. These treatments do a deep exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and allowing maximum penetration of the microchanneling serums. Check out our previous blogs about our BioRePeel and Dermaplaning to see which treatment works best for you.
Microchanneling vs. Microneedling
What’s the difference? Both microchanneling and microneedling create micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate the natural healing process. But there are several differences:
🔍 Microchanneling uses a stamper device with wire filaments. This means more precise channels with minimal trauma to the skin’s barrier. There’s no downtime and minimal irritation post-treatment.
🔍 Microneedling uses a device with tiny metal needles that glide across the skin. This results in redness and at least 48 hours of downtime.
At Skin Deep Esthetics, we prefer microchanneling because it offers comparable (if not better results) and NO downtime!
