My goal as a licensed esthetician is to help my clients achieve beautiful skin, but also to help them feel beautiful inside and out.
If your skin is problematic or you hate your face, you will feel self-conscious, unhappy and do everything you can to hide your skin.
Let me paint a picture for you…
You go out & purchase a new product line, because you read that this is the miracle line that will finally solve all your skin’s problems.
That doesn’t work, so you go out & try another line.
This one starts to work, but after a few weeks doesn’t, so you try a different line.
Then your friend tells you about the products she’s selling & you buy them because you like her hoping that these products will finally help.
Your skin is not any better & now it seems to be getting worse.
So…you try something else, which again, doesn’t seem to work!
Then you finally head to the Dermatologist, who puts you on medication and topical products that make the problem disappear, but now your skin feels awful – dry, itchy, red, sensitive.
Not only is the problem still there.
Your skin may end up worse than when you started with that small problem spot in the first place.
First off, you just spent hundreds of dollars on multiple product lines in probably a month or two.
Since none of those products worked, you kept trying something new, hoping to fix the problem.
As an expert in skin, I can tell you that it takes your skin 4-6 weeks to adjust to a new product line. If you’re jumping from product line to product line, your skin never had a chance to adapt.
That can create problem skin!
Then you bought from your friend, who is super-nice, but out there selling her products to anyone who will listen.
I’m not knocking home-based businesses, because I LOVE that women have a way to go out & make money while remaining stay-at-home-moms.
My beef is the lack of education & knowledge of how the skin functions, rather that what the product CAN do for the right type of skin.
(more on this topic on a later blog)
When this doesn’t work, you throw in the towel & see a Dermatologist
Dermatologists are GREAT! They can remove skin cancer, keep track of your skin over the years and prevent major skin problems from worsening or spreading.
I LOVE having a Dermatologist.
I don’t love the way they approach problematic skin!
Dermatologists immediate see a “problem” and put you on topical & oral medications.
Oral medications stress the gut & creates an imbalance in the body.
The body has to fix the imbalance in the gut, so it forgets about the skin’s problems & works to detox the gut.
Then you put topical medicine on your skin which is extremely drying, irritating and can cause more damage than good to your face.
Now your skin is raw, itchy, red and irritated. You may even peel!
As long as the initial problem is cleared up, most people stick to their routine, because they trust their doctor because he/she should know best.
Unfortunately, you are applying a bandaid to your skin’s problem and not fixing the real problem.
Here’s what I mean…
Most of the time you stop oral or topical medication and after a few months, your skin begins to breakout or look bad again.
If you were to really fix the problem, stopping something would NOT result in your skin getting worse.
You need to figure out the source of the problem and fix it from the inside out, THEN you’ll have beautiful, healthy skin for life.
Healthy skin from the inside
Most of the time, your problem skin on the outside is caused by something on the inside.
Let me ask you these questions:
Is your diet good?
Do you wash your face after exercising?
Are you stressed at home or work?
Are you sleeping?
Do you drink caffeine or alcohol every day?
Are you on daily medications for health or skin?
All of these factors affect your skin!
Most of our skin’s problems come from our gut, but they can also be related to Liver damage, which is NOT always caused by alcohol.
Let’s start with the gut
Our intestines are our body’s immune system, if something is off or unbalanced, we get sick.
This also means that if there are too many toxins held in our gut, our gut has to purge that toxin somehow.
Usually it’s through the skin (our largest organ).
We know that in Chinese medicine, our hands and feet are a map to our body.
Our skin is a map to our bodies and when we suffer from acne, rosacea or melasma (the mask of pregnancy), it is our body saying that something is out of balance or we are not as healthy as we think we are.
How do you know it’s gut-related?
I start all my clients with an elimination diet. They eliminate dairy for 2 weeks, then gluten and finally sugar (the hidden enemy).
If their skin still isn’t clear, I refer out to a naturopathic or functional medicine doctor to rule out other underlying causes or food allergies.
Working together, not only does your skin clear, but you begin to feel better, have more energy, feel less fatigue and sleep better.
What about the Liver?
I was writing an article for a trade magazine & just learned that our liver is BOTH an organ and a gland.
It is affected by food, medicine, diet, sleep, stress and of course alcohol!
The most common skin-related condition that’s caused from an imbalance liver is Melasma!
Melasma & the Liver
Melasma is called “The Mask of Pregnancy” because most women suffer during pregnancies due to the surge of hormones.
This is more common in pregnancies after age 30, because there has been more accumulated damage to the liver.
The surge in hormones via pregnancy or by taking hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills can also create the same stress to the liver.
Stop taking birth control or HRT and your skin will lighten up. This is why Melasma clears after pregnancy.
Another major factor in the liver function is medication.
ALL medication is bad for our bodies.
I do believe that medication has it’s place, but I also believe that most Americans turn to medication for the smallest problem and that’s where the problems lie.
Every round of medication you take stresses both the liver and the gut.
Then in turn, your skin reacts and doesn’t look as beautiful or clear as it once was.
The more medications or the longer you take a medication, the more damage accumulated.
Everything you put into your bodies can be reversed!
All you need to do is check your diet and start putting fresh fruits & vegetables, lean proteins and good fats.
Drink less alcohol and caffeine
Drink more water
Exercise often, sleep better and stress less
Over time, you will begin to feel better and even be able to wean yourself off harmful medications.
AND…Your skin will clear!
